Tails of Friendship: What to Expect After Introducing Your Cat and Dog

Continuing on our earlier blog post about introducing a cat and dog together in a home, we wanted to expand on what to expect during the adjustment period for a new pet. We went through this adjustment period ourselves with our sweet girl Jazzy!

Here's a general outline of what to expect after introducing a pet to a new home:

Three Days in a Pet’s New Home: Initial Adjustment

1. Stress and anxiety: Pets may feel overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed in the new environment. It’s not unusual for them to be wary and “on guard” during this time.

2. Exploration: Your pet will start exploring their new surroundings, sniffing, and getting familiar with new sights and smells.

3. Basic needs: Focus on providing basic needs like food, water, shelter, and safety. These are the primary concerns that should be addressed during this time and security in these needs will help your pet feel comfortable in their new space.

Three Weeks: Settling In

1. Establishing routines: Expect pets to start to adjust to regular feeding times, sleep schedules, and play routines.

2. Bonding: They begin to form bonds with family members, especially if they receive positive reinforcement and attention.

3. Reduced anxiety: Stress levels decrease as they become more comfortable in their new environment.

Three Months: Full Adjustment

1. Complete settling: Pets should now be fully adjusted to their new home and routines.

2. Increased confidence: They become more confident in their surroundings, exploring and interacting with their environment.

3. Stronger bonds: The bond between pet and owner strengthens, leading to a more harmonious and enjoyable relationship.

Keep in mind that every pet is different, and the adjustment period may vary depending on factors like age, breed, and individual personality. Be patient, provide a loving and stable environment, and your new pet will thrive in their new home!
